Peru : landslide leaves about 10,000 farmers incommunicado
An avalanche of mud and stones following heavy rains caused the overflowing of a river affected homes, cut a road and left it isolated some 10,000 people Wednesday in Cusco ( Peru South East ) region , informed the regional authorities.
Thirty eight houses collapsed and others were damaged by the rains that crash since Tuesday in Quellouno district , province of the Convention , Cusco department , said the mayor of that province, Fedia Castro told state news agency Andina .
A stretch of highway that connects at least six villages , where some 10,000 people live in the city of Cusco was damaged by rainfall " still do not stop " and weakened a mountain that caused the detachment on a regional road , he added .
The landslide , which caused the consequent overflow Quillabamba river occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, reported meanwhile state Civil Defense Institute that after an initial assessment reported eight families were relocated to tents in a safe area after the loss of their homes.
The Mayor Castro asked the regional government of Cusco immediate shipment of heavy equipment for descolmatar the river and clear the road to prevent other excesses that may affect Quellouno .
